NOMOS Glashütte is the brand that made odd lug widths a design language. The Tangente 38 runs 19mm [1] [9], a width Hodinkee once called non-standard outright [10]. The Metro 33 is 16mm [27] [28]. The square Tetra takes 18mm on a case that looks like it should carry 20 [19] [20]. And the model names wander independently of the case sizes: the Tangente 38 is 37.5mm, the neomatik 39 is 38.5, the Tetra neomatik 39 is a 33mm square [21] [22]. Every width below is lifted from the specifications block on nomos-glashuette.com and confirmed by at least one independent surface, and the families we could not verify two ways are listed as refused, not guessed.

Read the name, then ignore half of it

NOMOS names its watches by nominal family size, and the actual case is usually a decimal off: the Tangente 38 is 37.5mm [1], the Tangente 38 date is also 37.5mm [4], the neomatik 39 watches are 38.5mm [7] [24], and the Orion 33, Tangente 33 and Ludwig 33 are all 32.8mm [12] [15] [30]. That matters because the lug width follows the actual case, not the name: the neomatik 39 and the hand-wound 38 share 19mm lugs, while the smaller Tangente 35 at 35mm drops to 18mm [5] [6]. The Club family is the sharpest split in the catalog: Club 36 at 36.0mm takes 18mm [11] [13], Club 38 at 38.5mm takes 20mm [14] [16], with no 19mm Club in between. NOMOS sells its own replacement straps and metal bracelets in every width in this table, 16 through 20mm [33], which is the cleanest fix for the odd sizes; an aftermarket two-piece strap only needs to match the lug width.

The 19mm disease, and why it is deliberate

Ask a strap forum about NOMOS and the first answer is always the same: the lug widths are odd. The Tangente 38's 19mm drew Hodinkee's "non-standard lug-width" verdict in its Value Proposition review [10], and a 2026 video review of the Tangente neomatik 39 spends a full segment on the same 19mm complaint, noting that 19mm was popular in the 1960s and 1970s but the modern industry has settled on 20 and 22 [9]. The pattern is not random, though. NOMOS sizes straps to the case: every 32.8mm watch in the catalog takes 17mm (Tangente 33, Orion 33, Ludwig 33), every 35mm hand-wound watch takes 18mm (Tangente 35, Orion 35), and the 38-38.5mm generation takes 19mm (Tangente 38 and neomatik 39, Metro 38 and neomatik 39, Orion 38 and neomatik 39, Ludwig 38 and neomatik 39). The 40.5-41mm watches are the only standard-width NOMOS watches: 20mm across the board. So the rule of thumb that actually works: measure the case, round to the NOMOS size below it, and expect the odd width. The one family that breaks the ladder is the Club, which skips 19mm entirely, 18mm at 36.0mm of case and 20mm at 38.5mm [11] [14].

The Tetra neomatik 39 is not a 39, and takes 20mm

The square Tetra is where the NOMOS naming game peaks. The Tetra neomatik 39 is a 33.0 by 33.0mm square [21] [22], smaller than the name suggests, because square watches wear bigger than their measurement. And its lug width is 20mm, not the 18mm of the smaller Tetra 27 (27.5mm) and Tetra (29.5mm) [19]. That combination trips up retailer listings: at least two print 18mm for Tetra neomatik references, a figure that tracks the case-size intuition rather than the lug width NOMOS actually cut [43]. The correction sits in NOMOS's own launch specifications for the 175-years editions and in every independent measurement since: 33mm square, 7.3mm thick, 45.3mm lug-to-lug, 20mm lug width [22]. If you are buying a strap for any square NOMOS, check whether the reference starts with 42 (the 20mm neomatik generation) or 40 (the 18mm hand-wound generation) before ordering.

Quick-change spring bars: the Metro exception

Most NOMOS watches use ordinary spring bars that any strap shop's tool will handle, and NOMOS's own FAQ walks through the swap [53]. The Metro line is different: its straps come on quick-change spring bars integrated into the strap, and NOMOS's own FAQ flags the bestselling Metro as part of the quick-change family [54]. A WatchUSeek owner who tried to move the originals to a third-party strap reports destroying the strap in the attempt [29]: the bars cannot be removed and reused, so a Metro going aftermarket needs its own set of standard 19mm (Metro 38 and neomatik 39), 17mm (Metro neomatik 35) or 16mm (Metro 33) bars bought with the strap. The Orion and Ahoi families stick to standard bars, and the Ahoi's waterproof textile strap is a plain 20mm two-piece underneath the weave.

Buying NOMOS's own straps, in every odd width

The counter-argument to the odd-width complaint is that NOMOS sells its own straps in exactly the widths it uses. The official strap store runs 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20mm in Horween Shell Cordovan, velour, vegan velour, textile and metal bracelet form [33], and the FAQ publishes the strap length ladder (XS through XL, 95/60 to 140/95mm) so the length can be matched to wrist size the same way the width is matched to the case [55]. The NOMOS deployant clasp fits every leather strap from 17 to 20mm [56]. Third-party makers cover the standard 18 and 20mm widths well; 19mm is stocked but thinly, and 17mm and 16mm are the two where the official store is genuinely the easiest answer. Independent strap specialists such as delugs track the NOMOS catalog per model and confirm the same widths this table prints, 17 through 20mm across the Tangente, Metro, Ludwig, Orion, Tetra and Autobahn families [35] [39].

Rows we refused to publish

The Zürich family (ref 801-807, including the Weltzeit world timer) reads 20mm on one concierge listing checked this build [57], but no second independent surface with the width printed was found in time, so it stays out of the chart: treat it as probably 20mm and measure before ordering. The Minimatik (35mm, ref 400-series) and the Tangomat line are confirmed NOMOS families from the catalog structure [58], but their lug widths did not surface two ways this build, so nothing is printed for them. The gold Lambda and Lux atelier pieces and the 2026 Club Campus Full Rose and All Olive editions were announced with case sizes in the press coverage [59] but without a published lug width on a page we could cite; the safest assumption for the new Campus editions is that they inherit the existing 36mm and 38mm platform widths (18mm and 20mm), and the measuring guide settles it in thirty seconds.

Your watch is not in the table

Then measure, and do not let the model name sell you a width. Two NOMOS-specific traps before you search elsewhere: the number in the model name is closer to the case size than to it, but it is never exact, so a "38" is 37.5mm and a "39" is 38.5; and if your NOMOS is square, the reference prefix (40 versus 42) tells you the lug width faster than the name does.
