Strap listings are written as two numbers, like 20/16 or 22/20, and the second number quietly causes more wrong orders than the first. The first number is the lug width, the width where the strap meets the watch; the second is the width at the buckle after the strap narrows, which is the taper. Read the table as a menu, not a rule: at any lug width, straight (same number twice) and any listed taper will physically fit the same watch, because only the first number touches the lugs. Two conventions hold across every source: odd lug widths borrow even buckle hardware one or two sizes down, and no common taper exceeds 6mm because the strap starts to look pinched at the buckle.

What taper does to the way a watch wears

Taper is proportion language. A 2mm taper is the quiet default on leather: it reads balanced and modern, which is why most factory straps ship that way. A 4mm taper pulls the eye toward the case and makes the whole watch look slimmer and more vintage, at the cost of a narrower band under the wrist. The failure mode is mismatch of case mass: a thick 44mm diver on a 20/14 strap can look like the strap is trying to escape the watch, while a slim 36mm dress case on a straight strap can look clubby. Slimmer case, more taper; heavier case, less.

Taper on bracelets, and the rows that are fixed rather than chosen

On a leather, rubber or fabric strap the taper is a choice you make at purchase. On a metal bracelet it is mostly a fact you discover. Factory bracelets taper in set steps: the Rolex Datejust jubilee runs 20mm at the lugs down to about 16mm at the clasp, the modern Seiko 5 bracelet tapers 22 to 20mm, and the Timex Expedition North's factory leather strap runs 20mm at the lugs into an 18mm titanium buckle. You cannot re-taper a bracelet without replacing links, and integrated bracelets (Casio Edifice, Seiko Tuna styles) have no strap-style taper at all because the end links are shaped to the case. When a listing says a bracelet or strap is "straight end", that refers to the end that meets the case, not the taper; straight-end straps fit round cases like the Timex Weekender, curved ends fit shaped cases. The clasp side of a bracelet follows the same hardware rule as a buckle: match the width where the part attaches.
