The one rule that matters most: lug-to-lug should not exceed your wrist width (the flat distance across the top of your wrist). Case diameter is what everyone quotes; lug-to-lug is what actually overhangs.

Wrist width is estimated from circumference assuming a typical 1.2:1 width-to-thickness ratio. If your wrist is flatter or rounder than average, measure the width directly and use the calculator with your own number.
How to read the chart
- Dress, slim cases that slide under a cuff. When in doubt, go smaller; a dress watch should never dominate the wrist.
- Everyday, the versatile middle. Most modern watches (38-42 mm) land here.
- Diver / sport, these carry extra visual heft from bezels and thickness, so an extra 2 mm of diameter still reads proportional.
- Lug-to-lug max, the hard ceiling. Past this, the lugs overhang the sides of your wrist and the fit looks wrong regardless of diameter.
