The spring bar tool, end to end: which one you need and how to use it

Every two-piece watch strap hangs on two spring-loaded pins, and the only specialized tool worth owning for strap work is the one that releases them. This guide covers the tool itself: the fork, pin, and blunt ends; the Bergeon 6767 reference models with their replaceable tips; what works from a kitchen drawer when you do not have one; which end your Rolex, Hamilton, or generic watch wants; and the technique that keeps your lugs unmarked. Fork, pin, and blunt ends: what each end is for

A spring bar tool is a short hardened-steel handle with a working end (often two, one at each end, usually screw-in replaceable tips). There are three end geometries you will encounter:

The fork catches the shoulder of the telescoping bar tip and compresses it inward; the pin simply pushes it. Fine vs standard fork width is the whole reason the popular Bergeon line comes in two letter variants, and one forum review measures the fine fork at 1.3mm where most retail listings say 1.2mm, which tells you how close the tolerance story is: either fits a bracelet gap; neither fits the wrong job.

The Bergeon 6767 reference rows

Bergeon, the Swiss tool maker in La Chaux-de-Fonds, builds the 6767 line that watchmakers and forum reviewers treat as the reference standard. The three variants differ only in which tips are screwed into the ends:

Replaceable tips. The tips unscrew, and that is the design's best feature: ends from the S, F, and SF sets are interchangeable on the same body, so one handle plus spare tips covers every job. Replacement tips are sold separately (fine fork 6767-AF at 1.20mm, fine pin 6767-BF at 0.80mm in dealer listings) for a couple of pounds each, the steel is tempered to about 52 HRC, and the tool body is nickel-plated brass. Two honest caveats from long-term reviews: the tips work loose and need periodic re-tightening, and the thin pinpoint tip can snap if you lever with it, so reserve it for pushing, never prying.

You do not need the Bergeon to change a strap. But hardened, deburred tips with no rough edges slip less, and a slip is what scratches a lug, which is the actual argument for the Swiss tool over five-dollar clones.

Household alternatives: what works, and the caution that comes with it

The dedicated tool is a convenience, not a requirement. Items that genuinely work:

Caution notes, non-negotiable: work on a soft surface with the watch face down, put low-tack tape over the lug tops before starting, and approach the bar from inside the strap line rather than over the top of the lug. Any improvised steel that slips will leave a thin curved mark on a polished lug that only a refinisher removes.

Brand fit notes: Rolex drilled lugs, Hamilton, and the generic case

Rolex. Vintage and neo-vintage Rolex Oyster cases have lug holes drilled all the way through, which makes bracelet changes a pin job from outside: push a pinpoint tool or needle through the hole and the bar releases. Rolex phased drilled lugs out from the end of 1994 on Oyster models (Datejust, Air-King, Explorer) and around the end of 2000 on Professional models (Submariner Date, GMT-Master II, Sea-Dweller, Explorer II), so a modern Rolex has solid outer lugs and demands the fine-fork approach from inside. For no-holes Rolex work, watchmakers reach for a fine fork (6767-F class) or the Bergeon 7825 tweezer tool that compresses the bar from both sides.

Hamilton. The Khaki Field Mechanical 38mm ships with drilled lugs, so a pin end changes its strap in under two minutes; the 40mm and 42mm automatic versions typically use blind (undrilled) holes and want a fork. One Hamilton-specific trap: the factory fits 1.5mm-thick bars on most Khaki Field models, slightly thicker than the 1.2mm bars in many aftermarket straps, so if you swap straps keep the original bars for the bracelet.

Generic watches. Undrilled lugs plus a leather or rubber strap is the standard-fork case; undrilled lugs plus a steel bracelet is the fine-fork case; drilled lugs are always the pin case regardless of brand. Seiko divers add a wrinkle, 2.5mm fat bars that favor stouter tips, and that sizing detail lives on the spring bar sizes page with the rest of the bar dimensions. Quick-release straps need no tool at all: the fingernail lever does the compressing.

How to use one without scratching the lugs

  1. Prepare: soft surface, watch face down, tape over the lug tops if the watch is polished or precious, and a dish for the bars, which are about 1.5mm across and bounce.
  2. Pick the end: fork for undrilled lugs (fine through bracelet gaps, standard under soft straps), pin or blunt end through drilled lug holes.
  3. Slide the fork between strap and inner lug face and catch the shoulder of the bar tip, not the strap leather. You feel a slight resistance when it seats.
  4. Compress toward the strap's centerline, smoothly. Keep the tool flat against the lug so a slip travels along tape, not into steel.
  5. With the bar compressed, pull the strap end away from the lug and let the bar ease out. Release slowly; a spring bar under tension is a small projectile.
  6. Repeat on the other side. Reinstall by seating one bar end in its lug hole, compressing the other end, and pressing the strap down until it clicks, then tug-test both ends.

The technique summary experienced owners give: push the bar in far enough, move the strap out slowly, and never pry against the lug itself. Approach from inside the strap, work one side at a time, and if the fork slips, reposition rather than force.
