Watch Case Size by Wrist Size

The two searches everyone does: "what case size for a 6.5 inch wrist" and "what about a 7 inch wrist". The honest answer has two numbers, not one. Case diameter decides how much of the wrist top the face covers. Lug-to-lug decides whether the watch physically overhangs the sides. A 42 mm case with 50 mm lugs fits wrists a 42 mm case with 45 mm lugs does not. This table gives you both, per wrist size.

The one hard rule: lug-to-lug should not exceed your wrist width, the flat distance across the top of your wrist. How to read the style columns: dress watches read best slightly small, so the band shifts down 2 mm; divers and sport watches carry extra visual heft from bezels and thickness, so the same wrist carries 2 mm more. Ranges deliberately overlap: near a boundary, the lug-to-lug column wins over the diameter columns.

That ceiling is the real constraint: a 42 mm diver with a 50 mm lug-to-lug overhangs a 6.5" wrist even though "42 mm" sounds fine, while the Tudor Black Bay 58 (39 mm case, 47.8 mm lug-to-lug) is widely cited as close to the largest watch that sits cleanly on one. Wrist width at 7" / 17.8 cm is about 52 mm. Everyday sweet spot: 36-43 mm, dress 34-41 mm, sport 38-45 mm, lug-to-lug up to 52 mm. A 7" wrist is the statistical center of watch design; nearly every modern 38-42 mm watch with a lug-to-lug under 50 mm was designed around it. The classic mistake here is buying by diameter and ignoring a 53-55 mm lug-to-lug on a chunky 44 mm diver, which overhangs.
