How to Measure Your Wrist Without a Tape Measure

A tailor's tape makes wrist measuring easier, but it is not required. What is required is a flexible thing to wrap (paper strip, string, shoelace, charging cable) and a rigid thing to measure with (a ruler, or the printed calibration objects below). Done carefully, the paper-and-ruler method lands within 1-2 mm of a tailor's tape, close enough for every watch sizing decision, because a 2 mm error almost never changes the recommendation.

What you need

One rule from the start: do not use stretchy fabric or elastic. Anything that stretches reads short by several mm, and circumference errors propagate straight into your size recommendation.

The method, step by step

  1. Wrap the strip around your wrist just above the wrist bone, where a watch head actually sits. Not on the forearm above it, not over a sleeve or bracelet.
  2. Snug, not tight. You should be able to slide one finger under the strip. That is the slack a comfortably worn watch has.
  3. Mark the point where the strip overlaps itself, straight across with the pen. Marking tight against your wrist beats estimating later.
  4. Measure flat. Lay the strip on a table and measure from the end to the mark with the rigid ruler, reading in mm if your ruler has mm divisions (most do; check the close-spaced side).
  5. Write it in mm and in cm. Watch sizing works in mm; knowing both saves conversions later.

Coin diameters are US Mint specifications; card size is the ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 standard every payment card follows; banknote and paper sizes are US Bureau of Engraving and Printing and ISO 216 standards. Because these are manufacturing standards, not approximations, a coin-stepped measurement is genuinely mm-accurate; its weak point is your stepping discipline, not the objects.
