How to Measure Your Wrist Without a Tape Measure
A tailor's tape makes wrist measuring easier, but it is not required. What is required is a flexible thing to wrap (paper strip, string, shoelace, charging cable) and a rigid thing to measure with (a ruler, or the printed calibration objects below). Done carefully, the paper-and-ruler method lands within 1-2 mm of a tailor's tape, close enough for every watch sizing decision, because a 2 mm error almost never changes the recommendation.
What you need
- A strip of paper about 2 cm wide (printer paper, receipt, sticky note taped end to end) OR a non-stretchy string, shoelace, or USB cable.
- A rigid ruler. No ruler either? Print this page (see the printable strip below) or use the household calibration table further down.
- A pen or pencil to mark the overlap point.
The method, step by step
- Wrap the strip around your wrist just above the wrist bone, where a watch head actually sits. Not on the forearm above it, not over a sleeve or bracelet.
- Snug, not tight. You should be able to slide one finger under the strip. That is the slack a comfortably worn watch has.
- Mark the point where the strip overlaps itself, straight across with the pen. Marking tight against your wrist beats estimating later.
- Measure flat. Lay the strip on a table and measure from the end to the mark with the rigid ruler, reading in mm if your ruler has mm divisions (most do; check the close-spaced side).
- Write it in mm and in cm. Watch sizing works in mm; knowing both saves conversions later.
No ruler at all: the printable strip

No printer either: calibrate with objects you already have
Everyday objects have exact, standardized dimensions. Put one on a sheet of paper, trace its edge end to end to build a scale, or simply step your strip along it:

Coin diameters are US Mint specifications; card size is the ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 standard every payment card follows; banknote and paper sizes are US Bureau of Engraving and Printing and ISO 216 standards. Because these are manufacturing standards, not approximations, a coin-stepped measurement is genuinely mm-accurate; its weak point is your stepping discipline, not the objects.
Making the number mm-accurate
- Measure twice, use the larger. Wrists swell; the larger of two morning measurements is the stable one.
- Read the ruler square-on. Viewing at an angle (parallax) shifts mm marks by 1-2 mm.
- Mark, then measure. Never read the number while the strip is still on the wrist.
- Round to the nearest mm, not to the nearest cm. A 165 mm and a 170 mm wrist get different lug-to-lug ceilings.
- Verify a printed strip with a quarter. If the quarter's edge does not land at 24.26 mm, the print scaled; reprint at 100%.
