Lug-to-Lug, Explained

Ask how big a watch is and you'll get one number: case diameter, in millimetres. It's the number brands advertise and the number buyers fixate on, and on its own it tells you surprisingly little about fit. The measurement that actually decides whether a watch sits flat on your wrist or hangs off the edges is lug-to-lug.

The one-sentence version: if a watch's lug-to-lug is longer than the flat width across the top of your wrist, the watch is physically too big for you, no matter what the case diameter says.

What lug-to-lug measures

Lug-to-lug (often written L2L) is the straight-line distance from the tip of the upper lugs to the tip of the lower lugs, measured parallel to the strap. The lugs are the four prongs that stick out from the case, two at 12 o'clock, two at 6, where the strap or bracelet attaches. Lug-to-lug is the total vertical footprint of the watch head on your arm.

Case diameter, by contrast, is just the width of the round case, not counting the crown. It tells you how much dial you get. It does not tell you how long the watch is, and length is what has to fit.

Why it beats diameter: the two-40mm problem

Two watches can both be "40 mm" and wear completely differently:

The 40 mm watch is the one that wears bigger. This is why "a 40 mm watch can wear larger than a 42 mm one" is one of the most repeated sentences in watch reviews, it's a lug-to-lug effect wearing a diameter costume.

Real examples from our measured database: the Tudor Black Bay 58 is 39 mm across but 47.6 mm lug-to-lug, while the Omega Speedmaster Professional is a full 42 mm across yet only 47.5 mm lug-to-lug. On the wrist, the smaller-diameter Tudor occupies essentially the same length as the bigger Omega. Diameter would never tell you that.

Your wrist has a flat width, and that's the limit

Your wrist is not a flat plate; it's a curved oval with a flat-ish section across the top. A watch sits properly when its whole lug-to-lug span stays inside that flat section. When the span is longer than the flat width:

When the span fits inside the flat width, the case and lugs bear on the wrist top, the strap takes the curve, and the watch stays put. That's the entire game.

To get your flat width: measure across the top of your wrist with a ruler at the spot where a watch head sits (see how to measure, 10 extra seconds). Or measure your circumference and let the calculator estimate it: flat width runs roughly 45-48 mm on a 6-6.5" (15-16.5 cm) wrist, and about 52 mm on a 7" (17.8 cm) wrist.

How to find a watch's lug-to-lug before buying

  1. Check the manufacturer's spec page first, Seiko, Hamilton, Tudor and most majors publish it.
  2. If it's missing, search <model reference> lug to lug, review sites almost always caliper-measure it.
  3. Beware integrated-bracelet watches (e.g. Tissot PRX): the "case-only" lug-to-lug and the effective length including the fixed first links differ by several mm. Judge by the effective length.
  4. Then check it against your wrist width, or plug both numbers into the calculator to see the watch drawn to scale on a wrist your size.
